On Tuesday I wanted the clocks to stop. Could I not just stay 49 forever? I was mourning the loss of my forties, the last vestiges of youth and feeling fearful of the years ahead. Of course the day flew by, especially as I made sure that I kept very busy... And stayed up until the bitter end.
My actual birthday began at six with aspie boy singing Happy Birthday, and Smiley needing a nappy change! I looked in the mirror, and I looked the same. What was I expecting? But change is needed. The last ten years have been difficult, and my 50th birthday is as good time as any to close the door on one decade, and plan for a better one. I began my new campaign with an alfresco coffee that was nearly shared with a friendly gull.
Next stop was a wardrobe update: I've grown older and larger, and I have no work clothes that fit, and no interest in trying to find them. So I used this free service.
Then a quick dash home to find lots of lovely birthday wishes, cards and beautiful flowers. But one thing was missing. And then, at 11 am it arrived: a text from Tanzania from my lovely daughter!
Back out again for lunch with a friend.
An afternoon spent working and caring for the kids was followed by an evening 'date' with my son to see a musical theatre production at his school. It was just lovely, the kids acted and sang their hearts out!
As we were leaving the first rain drops started to fall. But until then, the sun had shone all day. I'm hoping that this is a good omen for my next 50 years :D

Lovely! I'm so glad you had a good day and *gasp* you went shopping for yourself! A momentous day indeed!
ReplyDeleteAlthough late, but anyway... Happy Birthday... And the number is just the number... it's what you feel inside you that counts... :) xxx
ReplyDeleteWodyermean 49 is the las vestiges of youth? Rubbish! 60 is old, granted (although I think that might change in about 10 years time :)) but 50? Feh! I'll be joining you in 11 weeks time (-2days) and shall enjoy making the most of our fab 50s together. Infinity and beyond!
ReplyDeleteWhat Midlife Single Mum said!
ReplyDeleteAm pleased you heard from oldest daughter.
I can't think of a better birthday! xx
Sounds like a lovely day! You certainly don't look 50!! :)
ReplyDelete@Kate - I know :) It's the first time I've actually TRIED ON clothes before buying for ages..
ReplyDelete@Petra Rovere - Thank you xxx
@Midlife Singlemum - Infinity sounds good :)
@Barbara - Yes me too :D xx
@The Bright Side of Life - Oh I do sometimes!
My mother's life was at it's best in her fifties, and so is my mother in law's. You have so much going for you, you're smart, fit, broad-minded, up to date, and have plenty to keep you busy. I'm off out for a pint, I shall have a toast for you!

That sounds a lovely day (what I wouldn't give for a personal shopper!)
ReplyDeleteWas your birthday Wednesday 20th? Mine was!
:)
Oh... belated Happy Birthday by the way!
ReplyDeleteHappy 2 days after your birthday! Now where did you find this free personal shopper? I didn't even know they existed!
ReplyDelete@LUCEWOMAN - that's good to hear :) and hope you enjoyed that pint x
ReplyDelete@Suburbia - Yep it's Happy Birthday to both of us :)
@Lisa S - there's a few of them around. This one is a free service in Debenhams. Top shop have one as well in their St Stephen's Green store in Dublin
Nah 50s not old! (I have 6 years to go) But I'm so glad you treated yourself to some new clothes and had such a lovely affirming day. The best thing about getting older is knowing who you are and (on the whole) liking who you are. I think you're brilliant. Vix x
ReplyDelete@Vegemitevix - I'm not sure that I know who I am, but things like that just don't seem to matter any more. And thank you x
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely day and I'm pleased you managed to do some things for yourself. And I LOVE the idea of a personal shopper as one who also pretty much loathes shopping and generally just picks up the odd basic garment from Tesco or Asda.
ReplyDeleteA cliche and a platitute it may be, but age just doesn't seem as defining as it used to. I certainly hope I'm as young minded when I reach the (not at all old!) age of 50 ;) x
@Beadzoid - yes a lot of my clothes are thrown in the trolley in Tesco too :) Yeah 50 really isn't old now, you just have to pace yourself a bit more x
ReplyDeleteI was sat here before and thought "I'm sure it must be C's 50th soon" as I remember you mentioning it before. So I've just discovered I missed this post :(
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a wonderful time and it's great you got some 'me' time. I've always wanted to try a personal shopper- how fab! xx
@Heather Lucas - Thank you, and guess what? I'm out tonight AGAIN for a meal that my friends are calling a birthday bash, the good times just keep on rolling :)
