Well the good news is that I got the buggy back.
The bad news is that Smiley has grown again and it really is a bit small now. I think it will be for emergencies only from now on, sadly.
Cue tearing of hair out in handfuls.
Even I could see that she is now more comfortable in her moulded seat prescribed by the occupational therapy team. But I have persuaded them that the current wheelchair is simply too big, for the car and for the house, sooo it has been agreed that a new, smaller frame will be ordered to support the seat. And I plan to ensure that it is as practical and buggy-like as possible, with a rainhood and other accessories, taken from her current buggy. Now all I have to do is wait.
But in the meantime it hasn't stopped raining. So this is what I tried today.
It took more than an hour to walk to the school and back, and by the time we got home Smiley was completely soaked. In the buggy she would have been bone dry. She did giggle all the way home though, and it has been a warm day, so I don't feel too guilty...
When we got back I toileted Smiley and changed all her clothes, bagged the nappy and took it out to the bin....only to discover that the maggots were back :( And it's only been 1 1/2 weeks since the last bin lift. So instead of more fun, or summer camp, Smiley had to watch videos all afternoon while I emptied and scrubbed out the bin and then myself. Topping off a great start to the holidays there was an incident later with constipation and floor that needed cleaning, say no more I think. Looking on the bright side I got lots of exercise and fresh air and halted a maggot invasion - for today at least.
Can the holidays get any better? I really hope so!

My friend has two children with CP and she has had such difficulty getting the right wheelchairs. She has found it takes so long and then there is the expense if you don't want the ones provided by the NHS. Its ridiculous that people have such trouble getting the right equipment. I hope you get something sorted soon and as for the weather, well, I hope it improves. I have that sinking feeling in my stomach when our holidays start next week, not helped by the continual rain:( Deb
ReplyDeleteDid I ever give you a link to a company that makes custom rain hoods and leg covers.? I can't remember if I posted it on your buggy post or not. Rotten start to the holidays, I hope your son manages to enjoy himself even with wrinkly fingers. It can only get better, right?
ReplyDeleteI shall swear to never complain again.....at least I don't have maggots to deal with! That really stinks, not to mention everything else! You always manage a smile though which I admire.
ReplyDeleteAt least I don't have maggots to deal with so I shouldn't complain. Somehow you always manage a "smile"....how do you do that?
ReplyDeleteYou may not like this idea but... Leave the bin lid open. Birds will eat all the maggots as they wriggle to the top. My husband shoots pigeons and rabbits as they attack our veg garden, and I often end up with maggoty corpses in the bin. How do the maggots get into bodies wrapped in plastic carriers in a shut bin? I have no idea, but leaving the lid open for a few hours a day seems to solve the problem.
ReplyDeleteEEk..what a difficult day!I hate maggots and swarms of flies. Try 'Bin Buddy', I got it in Superquinn. Expensive enough at about €6 but dispels flies and says it works on maggots too. I so admire you for fighting the odds and getting out there regardless though, good for you. Such a pity about the buggy and am glad you're standing your ground and getting what you require to suit YOUR family needs ;-)

Yuck maggots, I no likey! It endlesslessly exciting being the mum of special needs kids isn't it? Just not the kind of excitement you envisaged eh. Hope things improve from here on in x
ReplyDelete@Deb - Hopefully I'm getting there with the wheelchair and the weather is supposed to get better next week :)
ReplyDelete@Renata - Yes you did! And I'm pretty certain I saved it somewhere, so as soon as I have the new base I will contact them :)
@Lora - Oh I'm so glad I make you smile, even when I'm ranting :)
@janerowena - Your suggestion actually makes a lot of sense, but not when it's raining I guess, and sadly it's doing that a lot right now.
@jazzygal - Thanks for the advice, I will definitely check out Bin Buddy :)
@lyndylou - No I have HUGE problems with maggots and I was not a happy camper! x
