Dear Mr Brewer

Please take a close look at my daughter.  She's one of those disabled kids.  The kind you allegedly said should only be allowed to live after the cost has been evaluated.  She has cost A LOT since she was born.

(Dear reader, of you want to know the full horror of what he said, just google Collin Brewer Daily Mail)

But you only deal with cold hard economics, Mr Brewer?  Then let me tell you that my daughter keeps a whole army of people in employment:

Doctors, nurses, consultants, therapists.

Teachers, special needs assistants, social workers, care staff.

Whole companies that manufacture and service wheelchairs, hoists, therapeutic beds, walkers, special shoes, equipment and medication.

The cost of all this?

Massive.

But take another look at those pictures, Mr Brewer.  Look into those beautiful innocent eyes and tell me that your heart is not lifted.  You would be the first.

You see I look at it another way.

I look at the joy that she brings to everybody's lives.  And the value of that?

Priceless.

Sincerely yours,

Smiley's Mum

I'm adding this post to a linky to protest about Collin Brewer's appalling views over at Downs Side Up, where Hayley blogs about her beautiful daughter Natty, a child model with Down's Syndrome.

  1. Beautifully put. She is indeed Smiley, and puts one on my face every time I see a picture of her :)

  3. Smiley is the best therapy for me and I've never even met her!
I can almost brush that Nazi to one side as just another heartless idiot, but what really bothers me is that he was re-elected as a Councillor after he made those remarks....what kind of people voted for him???
Beautiful post about a beautiful girl XXX

  4. First time popping over. Wow! very well put. Your daughter is such a beautiful and that smile would melt a heart of ice. It is HORRIBLE the way "they" treat people and children with disabilities. Way to stick it to the Man!!

  5. I couldn't believe the callous comments - and not once, but TWICE! Disgusting.

Perfect post, to the point, simply stated. My heart is definitely lifted every time I read a Smiley update, especially when there is a picture to go with.

I doubt this man will genuinely feel shame for his comments, but I hope that he is punished by loss of position, status, and what he seems to value above all else - money.

  6. I haven't read Brewer's words and I am not sure that I want to. I am on your side. I am on Smiley's side. I sincerely hope that your voice and those of the other parents etc are heard. xx

  7. Your daughter is beautiful. A well put, succinct letter I couldn't have said it better myself. I wonder if Mr Brewer realises that we, the disabled, the parents of disabled and those with a modicum of compassion will not go quietly.

Thanks for commenting on my post too

  9. I hadn't read about this, I knew he had said something shocking but I just didn't get to read up on it. I'm as appalled as I knew I would be. Very well said. I think Smiley is a bit of a posster child herself ;-)

  10. Oh those photos have made my day. Really really made my day. I always look at Smiley and hope it's a glimpse into H's future. She is beautiful and really lives up to her name :D I like how you've pointed out all the jobs that are created because of children like Smiley and H - I'd never thought of it that way before. xxx

    1. Thanks :) And yes one reason I keep posting photos of my daughter and blogging about her is to give hope to worried families who have young children :) xxx
