The Calm After The Storm

You know how it is when things build and build and build and then there's a crisis, then it blows over and everything calms down. That's been the story of the past seven days. Though there have been a few squalls of a different kind: alarm systems that had to be urgently fixed, loss of all communication with the outside world - the house phone, broadband and mobile all going down simultaneously, and there was me thinking I was safe from that by going with different providers!

But I have reasons to be cheerful too.

A big meeting about Smiley

Very very happy with Smiley's post school programme: it's only for two years, but the idea is to review everything to make sure that she is fully ready for adult life (and have some fun too). So I have appointments coming out of my ears for her - but I don't mind that if I feel they are productive. And so far they are.

Best of all, her team really seem to believe in her. They too think that her vocalisations are speech, it's just that her enunciation is so poor that no-one can understand what she is trying to say. But we do answer, of course!

Dancing with my daughter

With more support and more help, I'm feeling more energised to do things with Smiley, and so there's been a lot more dancing, including doing my best Miley Cyrus impression more than once. But wearing more clothes obviously.

Time Out with my eldest

Angel and I have caught the odd episode of Jessica Jones together on Netflix when our down time has coincided in the evenings. Hint: we're loving it.

I also took her to see the final film in the Hunger Games series, which was enjoyable, but I didn't think that it was nearly as good as Mockingjay Part 1.

Spoiler alert!

Part 2 was over long, there was too much dialogue not in the book, too many changes to the story, too many unanswered questions and a schmaltzy ending.

Here's hoping that Star Wars does not disappoint...

  3. It sounds encouraging that speech therapists believe Smiley is trying to speak and want to work on developing that. The other day I watched a video by the mother of a daughter with cerebral palsy who also vocalises and can say a few words but not full sentences, and yet can clearly understand what others say and can choose things if people present things to her (e.g. touch this hand for X and that hand for Y). She also has a powered wheelchair and can steer it, even up ramps into cars (which are narrow; that must take skill) -- very unusual for a person with cerebral palsy *and* severe intellectual disability. Yet they had tried a Dynavox with her, but she hadn't been interested in it, yet her speech had improved somewhat recently (learning a few more words, that is). It's strange to me that someone doesn't seem too frustrated by being unable to speak, even if they have always been that way.

    1. I'm looking forward to watching that video, it sounds very interesting and encouraging.

I think that my daughter does get frustrated at times, and she will get upset or worse, withdraw. But she learned the power of positive reinforcement early on, and if you give her what she wants, she always lets you know, usually with a big smile, so you just want to do things for her, and meet her needs.
