30 Day Song Challenge

Day 30 - your favourite song at this time last year

Still playing this whenever I feel suffocated by living in the city:

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Edmonton

Day 29 - a song that reminds you of your childhood

Okay this might be stretching childhood a bit, but during my teenage years the hottest ticket in town was for the annual Christmas Party organised (I think) by the local recording studios and all the musicians who were around at the time, or lived locally, would be jamming on stage.  Regulars included Andy Fairweather-Low and Dave Edmunds, but the star attraction was always Robert Plant...

Day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty

Failed at this one...I don't want any songs to remind me of all the stuff I did wrong or didn't do.

Day 27 - a song that you wish you could play

I'm cheating here: this is something I used to play very badly but would love to be able to play well.  It is so satisfying :)

Beethoven - Sonata Pathétique 1st Movement

Day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument

I studied music as a teenager: there was a music department in my school, and best of all it was in a separate building down the road so I escaped down there to practice the piano as often as possible.  Both my Dad and Grandad played the piano, so there was a huge collection of sheet music in the family.  Some of the stuff I still play...

Day 25 - a song that makes you laugh

As you may have noticed, I have a bad habit of listening to gloomy music.  I actually can't think of any song that makes me laugh.  But when this song is played I would probably be laughing and jumping up and down like a madwoman with my pals, or sometimes with Smiley :)

The Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

Day 24 - A song you will play at your funeral

One of the things that's a little bit annoying about being a carer is when people tell you you're a saint.  No I am not!  (My friends from my past life know this already) I just want to be the party girl that I always was, so I'd really love to shake things up a bit at my funeral and play Christina's version of 'Is That All There Is?, but I haven't got the nerve to post it here, so you'll have to made do with the original...

Peggy Lee - Is That All There Is?

Day 23 - a song you will play at your wedding

When I announced my engagement, I didn't get the usual responses.  Instead of "Congratulations", I got "You, getting married, I don't believe it!" and other similar sentiments.  But we went ahead anyway.  And as you may know, it all went horribly wrong, despite one of our therapists describing us as "soul-mates."

So if I can't make a marriage work with my soul-mate, I'm certainly not going to give up my freedom for anyone else without a fight.  But if I was dragged kicking and screaming to the altar again it would be to something like this:

Transmission Vamp - Baby I don't Care

Day 22 - a song you listen to when you're sad

Well that depends on whether I want to wallow in it (The Smiths perhaps) or feel better, in which case I'd probably listen to something like this:

The B52s - Funplex

Day 21 - a song you listen to when you're happy

It's Friday, the Easter holidays are starting.  The perfect day to post up one of my happy songs.

Hole - Malibu

Day 20 - a song that you listen to when you are angry

Loud music is always the cure if I'm feeling angry..I've already posted up a lots of the songs that I would play, but here's another one..

Billy Bragg - To Have and To Have Not (1987)

Day 19 - a song from your favourite album

Well who buys albums now we have iTunes? My last purchase was Green Day's American Idiot, and I guess it's still my current favourite...

Green Day: Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Day 18 - a song you wish you heard on the radio

I liked lots of obscure stuff in the early 1980s, and I've no wish to listen to most of it again!  But one or two songs stick in my head, this is one of them, and I never hear it on the radio. Perhaps some people think it's political? I just like the sound of the song and the sadness.

B-Movie - Remembrance Day

Day 17 - a song that you often hear on the radio

I listen to a lot of talk radio, but for music I switch over to the fabulous Phantom FM and they play a lot of stuff like this:

The Strokes - Heart in a Cage

Day 16 - A song you used to love but now hate

I used to be sentimental...though I don't 'hate' this

The Proclaimers: Sunshine on Leith

Day Fifteen - A song that describes you

Can't find one.  So this gives me an excuse to post up a song by one of my favourite bands -  the B52s -  "a positive, enthusiastic, slightly oddball party band"  which almost describes me, except I'm not a band, and not even in one *sighs*.

The B52s - Give Me Back My Man

Day Fourteen - A song that no-one would expect you to love

Tom Petty - Learning to Fly

Day Thirteen - A song that is a guilty pleasure

A lot of people hate this band and would mock anyone who likes them.  Perhaps this is because they were formed in a small town in the West of Ireland...and it shows.  But I dare you not to sing along.

The Saw Doctors - N17

Day Twelve - A song from a band you hate

I hate Eminem because he writes great songs that are listened to by Angel and her friends, but the topics are so dark and some of the messages so warped that I really worry how they will be affected. Surely much worse than the music I listened to when I was young: the Clash encouraging revolution and The Smiths to wallow in post-teenage misery.

Eminem - Stan

Day Eleven - A song from your favourite band

I loved this band from the first nano-second of hearing them on the radio. Been to see them far more times than any other band and even though we're all older, I'll still be jumping up and down at the front:

The Pogues - If I Should Fall from Grace with God

Day Ten - A song that makes you fall asleep

I am thinking that this song might send me to sleep - in a good way - and it has a positive message too, so that has to be good right?  I was going to post something else and I then I heard this on the wonderful @tomhappens....

Noah and the Whale - 'L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.'

Day Nine - A song that you can dance to

According to my kids, I can't dance at all...But not everyone agrees.  At college I always used to dance with the same boy to this song, whenever it was played:

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile

Day Eight - A song that you know all the words to

There are lots of these, most I wouldn't want to admit to....so instead I'll put up another fave: when my marriage was disintegrating I would play this very loudly in the car on the way to work, and if any other drivers annoyed me I'd turn it up even more and roll the windows down...

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Day Seven - A Song that Reminds You of a Certain Event

It was my last summer in Britain.  The house was sold and I was renting in East London with a bunch of mainly Irish pals.

It was also the summer of Italia 90.

Through a haze of Guinness and sunshine, we kept the party going till September.  It was my last chance to play at being single before married life began...and this was the song that I played to death on the jukebox in the local (Irish) pub.

The Stone Roses - Made Of Stone
Day Six - A Song that Reminds You of Somewhere

Manchester. The 1980s. The Hall Disco.

I nearly lived in the disco.  It was my social life, and my job as a glass-collector paid for my social life.  The DJ played this song when he saw me:

Iggy Pop - The Passenger

Day Five - A Song that Reminds You Of Someone

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Yes I know this is my favourite song, but it also reminds me of Angel.  I'd just acquired 'Nevermind' when I went into labour, so I gave birth listening to Nirvana on my Walkman...I was never into whale music anyway.

Day Four - A Song that Makes You Sad

This reminds me of the bad times, but I'd play it again if I was feeling sad and angry:

Sinéad O'Connor - Troy

Day Three - A Song that Makes You Happy

This is for Smiley: when she's happy, I'm happy :)

Don't Panic - Talulah Does The Hula

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Two - Your Least Favourite Song

Duck Sauce: Barbra Streisand

That's this week's song: listening to it sets my teeth on edge and I can feel my blood pressure rising!  I'm sure I'll find another equally annoying replacement soon though....
Day One - Your Favourite Song

Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit

Not very original, but it's been my favourite since I first heard it.  One of those WTF moments, like when I first heard 'Rock Lobster' by the B52s and 'The Boys from County Hell' by the Pogues.
